Do high-efficiency furnaces require more maintenance?
All furnaces require regular maintenance. Most furnaces operate below peak efficiency because of poor maintenance. A well-tuned and efficiently operating heating system can significantly reduce your annual fuel bill(s).
Mid. - VS - High-efficiency
- The difference is that the high-efficiency furnace is a condensing furnace, which offers you higher energy rating (saving fuel costs) and it may give you more venting options than a mid-efficiency furnace.
- High-efficiencies are typically 90% efficient, versus mid-efficiencies at approx. 80%. Typical older furnaces in Canada allow up to 40% of heated air to be lost up the chimney. The more efficient system saves more money every time you heat your home.
- Converting to a high-efficiency home heating system is more common as home owners realize the savings they can enjoy in their fuel costs. These units also have less harmful impact on the environment because they burn less fossil fuels.
Two-stage Heating
- A furnace with two stage heating operates on low stage heating most of the time, only changing to high when the outside temperature plummets. Low stage operates approx. 70-80% of the time under normal conditions. Two stage provides more heat distribution without temperature fluctuations in the home. They are also quieter than single-stage units.
DC Motor
- A variable speed direct current motor allows the furnace to operate on a lower fan speed 90% of the time. This results in quieter operation and a reduction in electrical costs (between approx. $200-300 annually)
